Small Dog Kennels

There are many advantages to owning a small dog: They don’t take up as much space as a larger breed and so are ideal for a smaller house; they don’t require such long walks to keep them exercised (though you will need to walk them just as frequently as a large dog); they eat less food, which makes them cheaper to maintain and they can easily be transported from one place to another in a portable dog kennel.

If one or more of these advantages appeals to you and you are considering getting yourself a small breed then you will need to think about how you are going to house your new family member. Small dogs should always be housed in small dog kennels. Don’t be tempted if a friend offers you a kennel that was once used for a larger dog or if the large dog kennels in the store are on offer. The reason for this is that dogs come to see their kennel as a sheltered area where they can go and feel safe. Dogs naturally like to have an overhead cover when they go to sleep (which is why you often find them under tables) and if the kennel is too large then they will consider this no better than the ceiling in your house. Also, if the kennel is kept outside then it is the dog’s own body heat which keeps it warm. A small dog kennel will soon warm up nicely when your dog is in it but a too big kennel will allow the heat to dissipate and so won’t stay warm.

Your small dog house should be tall enough for your dog to stand up without banging his head, but not much taller than that. It should also be wide enough to be able to turn around and long enough for the dog to lie down with its paws stretched out in front of it.
