A conventional mirror can reflect an image, yet a pane of glass produces a muted reflection. In that sense, any present day glass tabletop might be placed in the same category as other types of contemporary mirrored furniture.
A mirrored furniture style coffee table might consist of a round pane of glass on a metal three-legged stand. Such a coffee table can be found in the “Summer Rocks” catalog from the CB2 Company. Any item placed on that table is reflected in its oval shaped, glass surface.
Of course, glass is not the only solid substance that can produce a reflection. A steel surface can contain a reflection. The designers of the Pocket Dining Table have made use of that fact. They have given their table a gunmetal colored, powder coated steel tube frame. Like the glass coffee table, this steel table reflects the image of any object that sits on the top of that four-legged piece.
This table was designed to accommodate four people, but it can be extended. Thus, this table would allow an apartment dweller to provide guests with more “arm room,” if it were necessary. After the guests had left, it could be returned to its regular, space saving size. And since this table costs only $449, it gives anyone more spending money, more money that can be spent on entertaining guests.
Of course, in order to have a reflection, one must have a light source. At night that light source could be a table lamp. In fact, it is even possible to buy a lamp with a base that acts like a mirror. The Haley Table Lamp is an example of just such an item.
The Haley Lamp has a large metal base; the lamp pictured in the spring 2010 catalog from Crate and Barrel has a white lampshade. The catalog information does not indicate whether or not a homemaker could request a shade of a different color.
The CB2 catalog also contains a picture of a metal lamp. Called the “Peek Table Lamp,” it is a tall-brushed metal cylinder on a thin stand. Because the metal has not been coated onto the surface, the light from the bulb shines through the metal. At the same time, light within the room reflects back from the curved metal surface.
