It can be difficult watching your child suffer from eczema. In the winter, it is even more difficult as the cold weather aggravates already sensitive skin. The cold air, wind, and elements can sting eczema wounds and further dry out skin. This is why for an eczema treatment children must be especially cared for in the winter.
One of the most sensitive areas on your child in winter time is the face. Facial types of eczema, such as eczema eyelids, are heightened this time of year. This is because the face is so exposed and is difficult to cover up. However, you can build a natural barrier to protect your child’s skin against the elements.
If you are already using a good emollient or moisturizer that does not aggravate your child’s skin, then you should stock up for the winter. Plan on using a lot more, especially on areas like the face that are overly exposed. If your child is going to be out in the cold weather, make sure you apply a heavy amount to their face. Cover their skin completely. Get as close to their eyes as safely possible, because cold weather can make their eyes produce tears which increase eyelid eczema.
It is also a good idea to thoroughly coat their hands and wrists as well, if these are problem spots. While your child’s hands and wrists can be covered up in the winter, it can be very difficult to find gloves or mittens that are made from natural materials which will not irritate skin. Most are made from synthetic materials that are known to cause eczema. This compromise can be overcome by adding extra moisturizer to the hands. This moisturizer should be applied liberally and several times throughout the day, with extra added just before bedtime.
Adding extra moisturizer is an easy tip. It is relatively inexpensive and is simple enough that your child may be able to apply it on their own with only basic instruction. However, it can mean the difference between your child suffering from cold weather related eczema or being able to get out and enjoy the winter.
