There are several ways to clean your futon mattress. It does depend on how dirty it is of course. Stains and other spills that seep into the mattress can cause your mattress to smell or promote mold growth. You can wash it the same way that you would your traditional mattress – mild soap and water with a rag. Of course, the best way is to get a futon cover so that the spills will not get to the mattress in the first place.
In Japan, since their futons are traditionally made of two layers, the mattress layer and the topper layer, cleaning them is a different approach. There, it is common to take them outdoors and hang them. Then, using a bamboo stick or cane, beat them out and allow them to air in the sun. This is usually done daily.
