If you’re looking into buying a concrete mixer, you need to know how to measure the standard drum capacity of a mixer. Oftentimes, when reading specs on line or if you’re actually talking to a salesman you’ll hear that the drum capacity is 3-1/2 cubic feet drum but in reality it will be quite a bit less in terms of how much concrete you can mix at one time.
This is because most mixers run on a tilt or an angle, and while the overall capacity might be fairly high, due to the slant on the drum when mixing you aren’t able to fill the drum to capacity. Sometimes you can only get it about two thirds full.
There are some brands of cement mixers that come with a stand which allows the mixer’s drum to stand upright. With these types of mixers you can fill the drum up considerably more, meaning it takes less time for you to finish your job because you can mix more concrete at a time.
