Acne scars can be caused by either a loss of skin tissue or an increase in skin tissue. The various scar types have different names depending on their appearance.
Scars which are a result of tissue loss have the following names:
Depressed Fibrotic Scars
Large, deep elongated scars with irregular edges.
Atrophic Macules
Small and violet-coloured on pale skin.
Ice Pick Scars
Similar to Depressed Fibrotic Scars but not as deep.
Follicular Macular Atrophy
Small and look similar to whiteheads.
Soft Scars
Small, slight depressions in the skin surface.
Scars which are a result of tissue increase are called Hypertrophic Scars.
These are caused by an increase in the production of collagen.
There are several acne scar treatments available, and the type and severity of scarring will determine which treatment or combination of treatments is recommended. Visit the author’s site if you want to know how to get rid of acne scars.
