Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring – The Most Durable Bamboo Alternative

In the last few years, bamboo flooring has been criticized for not being as durable as hardwood.  While this is not strictly true as the durability of hardwoods falls along a broad spectrum depending on what type of wood you decide to install, there are more durable alternatives.  Traditional plank bamboo flooring is usually compared in durability to black walnut or maple depending on the shade of the bamboo.  Bamboo is a naturally light fiber and it is created in darker shades by heating the fibers.  This process of heating does soften the fibers and make them somewhat less durable.  The next type of bamboo flooring to come along was engineered bamboo.  This type had the added benefit of being more durable that laminate bamboo, but at the cost of not being constructed of 100% bamboo.  While better for humid climates than laminate, engineered bamboo flooring loosed its environemental appeal by including other constituents in the mix.  Thankfully there is a third alternative that is even more durable than engineered – this newer type is called strand woven bamboo flooring.  Strand woven bamboo flooring is twice as dense as the first laminate bamboo and has the added benefit of using all of the bamboo plant without producing the waste of laminate or engineered bamboo.  Find out more about why strand woven bamboo is a good choice and the best alternative to rain forest harvested hardwoods.
