One of the many things to consider when preparing for a new baby is your diapering choices; will you use disposables, modern cloth diapers (or nappies, depending where you are) or a combination of both, and how do you make that final decision? How will your decision affect your family, community and the environment at large? I mean we’re talking about a diaper here! Do you even need to consider these things? Well as global citizens, of course we do!
Modern cloth diapers are generally made from natural fiber. Cotton, hemp or bamboo nappies are slowly becoming the diapering choice of many mothers worldwide, but even the best cloth diapers will result in little accidents now and then which occur especially when out on errands, and these can be a bit off- putting. The use of Polyurethane Laminated fabric (PUL) is becoming the best option against these accidents. Though this is a non-biodegradable material and we need to weigh our choices against their effects on the well- being of the environment and not simply how it will affect us as an individual family unit, the material is so durable, that it will replace thousands of disposables before it will be discarded, and only a very thin layer (just 1 or 2 mm thickness) is necessary.
PUL diapers and diaper covers are now available worldwide so you can chose whether you prefer cloth nappies which have a thin layer of PUL material sewn on the outside, or if you prefer to buy PUL diaper wraps which are decorative and are available in a variety of colors and beautiful styles. The material can be machine washed or hand washed as you chose, in either hot or cold water, and will not shrink or stretch leaving you with a too loose or too tight nappy. In addition, it can outlast at least two babies and even then the PUL lining can be removed and replaced and your nappies will be as good as new; so why not make a choice that will benefit all of us involved in this global community?
