What Is Kinect?

Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect which will be coming out on November 4th, 2010, is a new accessory that enables you to control video games by only using your body.  Yes, your body will essentially be the controller since you will not need any other remotes or controllers.  It is definitely going to take what the Nintendo Wii did to the next level.  Let me break it down to you about how it works and some of the game experiences you can come to expect.

Kinect uses the combination of 2 different types of a cameras, a VGA and an infrared camera.  The infrared camera can judge depth and distinguish between humans and other objects in a room.  The VGA camera is like a typical video camera and captures that actual image of you and your friends while playing.  The combination of these two video signals is what does the actual magic through the use of specialized software.  Kinect even takes it a step further allowing your entire body to be able to control the video games, and that includes your vocal chords.  Yes, you’ll be able to speak commands out that will control the video games.

There are quite a few games coming out for the Xbox Kinect that will allow you to have different kinds of experiences.  Because the camera can provide instant feedback, the Kinect is great for workout games, which  there are a lot of.  One game is The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout based on the hit television show.  You’ll be able to get feedback on your workouts from Bob and Jillian from the show, as well as compete in challenges.  You won’t need a fitness board or anything like that, just your body and the Kinect camera.  Another type of game is Kinect Sports, allowing you to play various sporting events like beach volleyball, track and field, as well as ping pong by using only body movements.
