The age of experimentation when it came to design style is today known as the retro era. It was an age that saw the introduction of new materials and, with the end of the war, there was a need for people to express themselves in new ways. The mid-20th century found a great deal of innovation going on in the wider furniture design community and caught up in this was the creation of table lamps.

One of the distinctive touches that have come to be considered typical retro is the use of color and the use of burnt orange and avocado. For some reason these particular colors were particularly popular, especially when used with busy geometric designs and patterns. Lamp shades from the era have been marked by this fascination.

In order to make the designs stand out the use of bold decorative touches was common. Something as simple in concept as an alabaster table lamp could have been given a bold lamp shade to really offset the understated base.

As with most fashion styles the retro era fell out of favor and anything that was obviously retro was actively shunned. This has since changed and there is now a tendency to seek out anything that remotely resembles design from the era.

Retro design will now be found in all type of rooms from the modern contemporary style to those rooms that are faithfully recreating the retro era. The use of lamps in recreating the style plays a small but vital part and as a result we are seeing newer versions of the old style lamps being offered for sale in furniture stores across the country. Anyone who has stubbornly clung to their old lamps will now be satisfied to learn that they are back in fashion again.

Lamps from the retro era were cool and groovy before they seen as terribly outdated and discarded. The appeal of retro table lamps comes from the fact that they still have a modern look with a slightly eccentric skew to them. It appears that it is cool again to love retro lamps.
