Buying a moped or scooter can be a great investment for its gas mileage and general handiness. A 50cc moped can get over one hundred miles per gallon in fuel efficiency, which will save you considerable money if you do much driving at all. Because they are fairly standard motors, the correct fuel is cheap and maintenance will be easy to do yourself or cheap if you have a mechanical take a look.
In an effort to save even more money, many people want to buy a used scooter. After all, if you’re looking to save money on gas, you probably don’t have cash spilling out of your wallet. However, buying used might not be the best idea to save money.
The problem with buying used 50cc mopeds is that the cost savings are fairly minimal while the risk increases quite a bit. When you can buy a moped for less than five hundred dollars, there is only so much money to be saved by going with a used model. Say, for example, that you find a good deal on an old moped for two hundred bucks. You now own a vehicle with no warranty and unknown problems. You’ve temporarily saved three hundred dollars, but you will get less gas mileage and have far more repairs. The risk just doesn’t outweigh the financial gain.
Perhaps the only scenario that buying used makes sense is if you are mechanically inclined. If you know how to fix any problems that occur, then the risk is much smaller because you can keep it running and solve the hiccups for a lot less money.
Buying a moped can be a great financial decision, but buying one used is a little less of a financial guarantee. If you know your way around an engine, you can definitely make it work though.
