If you ever travel with your dog and stay away from home for any length of time, you may want to look into purchasing a portable kennel or pen. These are very useful to have on hand when traveling as you never know when you may end up in a situation where your dog may not be welcome to stay with you, in your room. You may not want to keep your dog cramped up in the car or in a traveling crate, and tying him up outdoors under a tree for shelter is not such a good option either.
The best type of portable kennel either has built in flooring, or comes with some type of portable kennel floor. Portable pens, such as the wire ones you often see set up at dog exhibitions are also great for traveling. They take up little room in the vehicle, they are very easy to set up and they will instantly provide your dog with a place where he can be safe and restricted when necessary. At times it may be necessary to also bring along some portable kennel flooring. For example, if your dog loves to dig and you are camping at a sandy location, setting up a portable dog pen may not keep your dog enclosed for very long if he is able to dig himself out underneath the enclosure.
One simple and yet very effective flooring to put down is instant kennel flooring. It resembles the floor of a tent in some respects, with grommet holes set all around the perimeter of the sheet of flooring. This should be stretched so that it is outside of the pen area, with the pen sitting on top of it. Use the small pegs supplied with the flooring to firmly attach the flooring to the ground by running them through the grommet holes. You will find that your dog will not be able to dig through that material. It will also protect him from any mites, fleas or ticks that may be laying in wait in the grass or dirt for an unsuspecting dog to come along and become infected.
It is not expensive, wraps up tightly into a fairly small bundle and is perfect for using while traveling. You can buy it online or from selected dog supply stores.
