Choosing the Right Jigging Rod

Jigging, not to be confused with gigging, uses high-speed rods and reels to retrieve either a streamlined metal lure at top speeds or a rubber jig designed to bounce slowly and hover off the bottom.

There are two styles of jigging, the “Yo-yo” style and the “Jerk crank” style. The style employed depends on the type of fish the angler is looking to catch. Factors to consider when choosing a jigging rod include rod action, rod length, weight, rod rating and finally, the type of fish the angler is after.

What is rod action? Jigging rods can have either parabolic or standard actions. A parabolic rod will bend all the way back while standard rods will typically only bend back a short distance from the tip. If the angler is after a bigger fish, he may prefer a rod with parabolic action. The more bend the rod has, the easier it is for the angler to apply pressure on the fish.

Jigging rods can vary in length from 4’8” to 6’. Shorter lengths are generally used when trying to catch larger fish. The shorter rod allows the angler to bring more pressure to bear on a heavier fish.

Rod weight is also extremely important. Because the angler is constantly working the road rather than placing it in a rod holder, the lighter the rod, the less fatigued the angler will become.

Rods are also rated by the weight of the jigs and test line that they are meant for. Hence, if an angler is targeting a heavier fish, he will want a rod with a higher weight rating.

There are many types of jigging rods available on the market. As with any type of fishing, there is never one rod that will suit all outdoor adventures, or all fish. Consult a specialist for your specific needs.
