Drinking and driving is no joke. It’s sad to know that not everyone thinks this way. Even though there are advertisements, organizations, and education on the subject in every corner of this country, people still choose to do it every day. True, some people don’t get caught for it, but that will just in turn make them want to try it again, and sooner or later, their day will come. Doing something that seems fun or maybe won’t cause any harm can easily turn into a DWI felony. Getting in trouble with the law is no laughing matter; legal punishments are designed to stop citizens from making such choices.
Spotting someone on the road that has been drinking is easy for a regular person, so it goes without saying that the trained eye of law enforcement officers can see it from a mile away. Driving too slow, driving too fast, swerving, and erratic movements are all obvious signs. Most of the time, if there is no existing record for the driver, the charge may just result in a misdemeanor if they are simply pulled over and they cooperate. Those that try to flee or resist will incur additional charge. Also, if there is a wreck involved, there is a list of charges that may be applied, which could easily be a felony, depending on what happens. Furthermore, if someone is killed as a result of the drunk driving, a hefty vehicular homicide charge will be tacked on.
It’s important to be a defensive driver at all times, so that perhaps these dangerous drivers may be avoided. It’s sad that it still happens so often, so it’s also important to educate the people close to us. We can help prevent DWI felonies in the future. The consequences are not worth it.
