Male pattern baldness (MPB) is a genetic condition inherited either from the mother’s side or the father’s side of the family. The process by which this condition can cause a man to suffer hair loss is already known. A substance found in the body attacks the hair follicles by preventing blood flow, thus, the nutrients and oxygen are blocked. As a result, the hair follicles are incapacitated and can not produce the needed hair shaft material. Through the hair plugs procedure, these useless follicles are replaced by means of transplants of hair from the rear area of the head.
It is still unknown why the front hair line and top spot of the head are the only areas affected by MPB while the posterior and sides are left alone. This is actually an advantage for any one who seeks treatment for their hair loss. These untouched areas serve as donor areas because the hair growth here is still thick. The removal from these areas is so simple and it is often unnoticeable since the surrounding hair covers up the thinning.
Hair plugs are actually an inappropriate name now because, at present, the procedure is perfected in such a way that hair follicles are transplanted one by one or in a group of two to three. The old procedure, which was the known method during the 1950’s, was far removed from the micro-surgical techniques being practiced today. Back then a hair restoration surgeon had to remove a round plug of the patient’s scalp that consisted of 10 to 15 living hair follicles. The removed plugged was then inserted through incision to the balding area of the head. As a result, the outcome was spotty and most of the time looked worse than being bald.
In present times, hair restoration surgeons are using follicular unit extraction as a modern technique where individual hair follicles along with their supporting structure can be removed. These hair follicle units are directly inserted into the patient’s scalp in groups of one to three in order to match the natural hair growth pattern of the surrounding hair. The scalp is less disrupted with this technique and as a result the patient can usually leave the doctor’s office without having any bandages and there is only minimal irritation.
If you are one of those men who have the male pattern baldness condition, you can consider undergoing the hair plugs procedure which is usually now known as hair implants or hair transplants. This procedure is recommended to get your hair growing back again.
