Most of the best mini notebook computer or netbooks come with a limited amount hardware that can hurt performance if the right OS is not set up on the computer. There are four well known operating systems or OS’s that have all found there way on to a netbook at one time or another. These OS’s are Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Ubuntu.
Windows XP is one of the oldest OS’s on this list and is one of the most widely used. Compared to the other operating systems this one can be a little bit of a disappointment. Just about any program will run on this system without a problem but it’s appearance pales in comparison to all of the others. Surprisingly this OS performs more poorly than both Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
Windows Vista is another OS that is often found on these notebook computers. Vista is not a good option for this type of computer because it requires too much power to run smoothly. Although Vista looks very nice it will not run well on a small notebook.
Ubuntu which is not a very well known system to many Windows users, is made out of Linux. This version of Linux has a very nice appearance and looks better than XP. Linux is also known for how generous it is to computers with slower hardware. Because of this Ubuntu will run very smoothly on a netbook. Although most of the Windows software will not run there are Linux alternatives, most of which are completely free. Although Ubuntu has more of a learning curve it is a very good fit for a micro laptop computer. It also has the advantage of being completely free.
Windows 7 is the newest windows operating system and it is surprisingly kind to slower computers. A netbook will run faster on Windows 7 than it will on windows XP and it will look much nicer too. Windows 7 is another really good candidate for an ultra portable laptop.
