Here’s a question: Is there a baldness cure? The simple answer is yes and no. I know that this answer is confusing and unsatisfying but getting bald and losing hair are a far more complicated medical condition. Consider the fact that there are a lot of factors that causes bald spots to appear on both men and women. Malnutrition or poor nutrition, extreme and radical diets, too much stress, hormonal imbalances and giving birth are some of the causes of hair loss. However, these causes are not actually considered baldness because the hair can still grow back once the external cause ends. For example, it is normal for a new mother to substantially lose a lot of hair after birth but just wait for a few months and it grows back because the hormones and body chemistry normalize once again.
Real baldness or baldness due to a medical condition is when hair is lost and the situation is often irreversible. Such a medical condition is known as Androgenic Alopecia. If the baldness is caused by this genetic medical condition, there is no true baldness cure. There are some treatments that could slow hair loss but once the hair has completely fallen out of the head there is only one effective method to resolve the problem. This is the method of implanting hair grafts to the balding spot.
There are two drugs approved by FDA for hair loss treatment. The first approved drug is Finasteride. It works by blocking DHT, a hormonal substance that is accountable for the hair loss. It is the DHT that attacks the hair roots or hair follicles and prevents the flow of nutrients that are needed to produce keratin. Hair shafts are made of this material, keratin.
Another approved drug is Minoxidil. It is applied topically by spreading and massaging it unto the scalp. The drug is absorbed into the hair root and blocks the DHT from attacking. Since the DHT cannot bond to the hair root, the hair shaft can continue to grow.
Finasteride and Minoxidil can both slow down the cause of hair loss in majority of people with baldness but they are incapable of aiding the dormant follicles to rejuvenate. In this case, the best alternative is to undergo hair grafts which are removed from one area of the head which is usually located on the posterior section. Then, these hair grafts are implanted into the bald spot. This is not an actual cure for baldness but, through this procedure, the hair can grow back which is the same result when baldness is cured.
