It’s always a good idea to look into items before I go out and buy. The internet is such a good tool for this and I don’t care what it is a quick research into what is out there will save you an extra trip. So I need a dog lead for my pup and as I thought there are many different kinds of dog leads out available some for fun and some for specific functionality.
For materials most collars and leads are made of either nylon webbing, a very strong material used for many purposes including safety for rock climbers or harness for people that work at great heights, or leather.
A slip lead for dogs is a single piece of material and forms a loop at the dog end that slips over the dogs head. These collar, lead combination is made from nylon rope or leather and is commonly used by handlers in dog shows. Sometimes referred to a “British” style lead these are not for walking.
Check cords are made of webbing or nylon rope and come in different lengths some very long. These are used for retrieving training dry and wet. Some float for less resistance in water retrievals.
The everyday leash is made of nylon or leather with a quick but secure clip at one end that hooks to a dogs collar or a harness. They come in different lengths while I prefer a shorter one for better control.
A very popular lead is the retractable dog lead. The mechanism on the retractable lead is similar to the common tape measure that will retract when you disconnect a lock. It has a cord inside that is the lead material. These tend to be quite long and give you very little control. Personally these are too loose for me and when you are trying to handle a large breed dog they do no good for correcting.
There are two dog leads where you can hook two dogs to a single lead. Constructed in a V or Y they are usually short enough where there is little chance the dogs will get tangled.
And, of course you can get fashion leads for fun. Matching collar and lead combinations are common. There are some for different occasions or settings. There are nice ones for formal visits, like to the vet, and fashion ones for beach , holidays, the sky’s the limit.
Just like collars there are many different types of leads that are sold at the local pet supply store. Figure out what you need and what size prior to going and save some time and possible some money.
