This is a guide for people who don’t yet know what Hindi movies are all about, but would like to. In it, you will learn what makes Bollywood movies so special, whether it’s the classics of yesteryear or the modern pieces being churned out at a yearly pace exceeding that Hollywood. The first thing to remember is that a Hindi film, above all, seeks to entertain and evoke emotions in the audience. And although things are changing somewhat, producers in Bollywood have traditionally favored making films that appeal to a wide spectrum of moviegoers, meaning that the majority of Hindi Films cross genres and instead of being just a romance, for example, a Hindi movie will also include action, comedy, family, and drama.

India is an old country with a culture that is as rich as it is long and this can be seen in not just the storylines of Hindi film, but also in how the story is told. The effects of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, two ancient Indian epics, can still be seen in Indian cinema as the tendency for plots to branch and give rise to multiple sub-plots, for example.

Hindi movies are usually musicals, and rely heavily on quality music to both bring audiences in to see the movies as well as to make more money via record sales. In contrast to marketing practices in the U.S. and Europe, Bollywood soundtracks are usually released before the actual movie release date as a tactic to bring people in. That’s why it’s so important that the music be catchy and appealing.

One other interesting thing about the music in Bollywood movies, called filmi, is that it is usually pre-recorded by professionals. Stars then later lip-synch songs. Although it is rare that a star will do the actual singing, some have sang at least one song themselves in recent years.
