Taking Steps to Avoid Damage to Expensive Juicer Parts

So you know all about the benefits of drinking freshly made juice, and you own a juicer? Good for you – home made juice is just about the healthiest drink you can possibly make, a fantastic source of vitamins, minerals, and healing nutrients that your body need to repair and replenish.

Juicer machines, like all mechanical things, do need to be looked after so that they last as long as possible. As someone who has outlived a few of these machines I thought I might share a few tips about cleaning and maintenance.

  1. Cleaning needs to happen as soon as possible after you finish juicing. If you don’t have time, then what you can just do is plonk the whole juicing head assembly in the sink or in a bowl of water (assuming that it can be detached from the juicer that is!). This prevents two things – first the pulp going hard, not coming off when you do wash it and building up, and secondly, it prevents corrosion and discoloration especially from acidic juices like citrus.
  2. Don’t force feed your juicer. The juicer parts inside are not designed to be overloaded, and this can easily happen if you forcefully cram too much in at once.
  3. Don’t put wheat grass, or other stringy and dry ingredients into a juicer not specifically designed for these things. At best you will clog up the mechanism, at worst you may cause the machine to overheat.
  4. Try not to leave the juicer sitting on a kitchen bench in the sunlight all day. The plastic used are usually not UV stabilized, and sunlight will make them go yellow and brittle after 6 months or so..

If you do break any juicer parts, the first thing to do is just wash and clean it all to see exactly what is broken. If you are in warranty, there should be no problems. If you need replacement parts my advice is to buy from an online store and NOT the original manufacturer  – they tend to charge way to much for spares.
