Clean Your Air Conditioning Filters to Save Money on Cooling

Every year around the early summer months everyone with an air conditioner in their home should take the time over a Saturday to clean out their air conditioning unit. Leaving the unit uncleaned at the start of air conditioning season could theoretically decrease the efficiency of your air conditioner and increase the costs associated with running it. Of course not all air conditioners are easy to get to and clean. Window units may be quite easy however central air installations may require a professional HVAC service company to do the work for you.

The costs savings of calling out an HVAC service business will obviously offset a lot of the costs associated with a less efficient cooling system so you will have to do a cost savings analysis or at least make an informed decision on whether or not you can do the service job yourself. If you can then even the smallest homes with the smallest electric bills can be improved for a net gain in savings.

Window air conditioners will obviously be much easier to clean than central air conditioning systems. As a central air conditioning system will be housed up in an attic or on the roof and many of the ventilation ducts can be found in crawl spaces the filters and air ducts can be harder and complex to get to. Window and special air conditioners however have everything right in front of you and with fairly easy access.

Most window units actually have easy access panels that remove from the casing which allow you to easily remove filters and clean out the airways which bring air into the unit and out of the unit. Cleaning an air conditioner like this really should only take you an hour or so and the energy savings can help incrementally lower your electric bill.

Remember, the energy saving from cleaning your air conditioner will be more substantial the less efficient your system is. It will also be more apparent the larger your home and system. If you have a large home with an inefficient cooling system then this should definitely be a high priority for you going into the summer season. Do it yourself or call a professional HVAC company and prepare your home for the summer.
