Spring Yard Work

It’s that time of year again and we’re cleaning up our yards after the winter snow melts and the trees start to blossom. Raking the grass and fixing the hedges are just a few of the chores waiting. The last thing I need to add to my list is repairing the gazebo canopy or looking for a gazebo replacement canopy.

If you live in a northern location you’ll be familiar with the type of spring yard work I’m talking about. Every year after the snow melts there’s a lot of work that needs to get done. The grass needs a good raking to get rid of the thatch that gets matted down under the snow, and the gardens may be damaged from some your snowplowing efforts.

Sometimes your hedges also get damaged if you had a particularly bad ice storm or heavy wet snowfall. In this case you might need to replace some of the bushes, or maybe just a trimming and small repair job. Most times you just need to trim them and you’re set for the summer.

Sweeping and cleaning the driveway is another messy chore to do after the city sweepers come by and remove all of the gravel and sand that was deposited to keep the streets safe during the winter ice. After you get the driveway swept you might need to apply a coating to refinish the concrete or paving bricks.

Next comes the fertilizer and weed killer for the lawn. Keep the neighbor’s dandelions out of your yard and help the grass recover from the frost and winter damage.

Finally, all of the gardens will need a good going over. Refreshing the earth in the flower gardens and turning over the vegetable garden will take some time. Planting and hoeing the seeds can be fun, but make sure you pick out the right kind of plants for northern climates.

Spring yard work always takes a fair amount of time and effort, but it’s well worth it when you’re sitting on your deck in the summer with a wonderful flower garden and thick green grass all around you.
