Each year the Tour de France winds its way across France and over recent years has also taken detours into other countries as well. Last year, 2008, the cycle race started in the United Kingdom before crossing the channel back into France. One French region that is always blessed with the tours presence is the Languedoc Roussillon in the south. This is thanks, on the whole, to the Pyrenees mountains that border Spain and provides the challenge of many strenuous uphill stages.

2009 will be no different with three stages scheduled to pass through the region on the 6th, 7th and 8th of July. The whole tour begins on July the 4th with a time trial starting in Monaco. The third stage begins in Marseille and enters the Languedoc to finish at the seaside resort of La Grande Motte. The next day sees another time trial in the city of Montpellier and stage five will begin at another seaside resort, Cap d’Agde and end in the Catalan city of Perpignan. This year the tour will also be taking a brief detour into Spain and Andorra for those tough mountain stages.
