Becoming a Banker

Do not let anyone in the world fool you, the investment banking career may prove to be the toughest to not only break into, but also stay into in the world. In general you will have students that are coming straight out of some of the top colleges in the country, fighting for the job that seems to hold a high turnover even with a large pay scale. It is recommended that while you are in college (regardless of where it may be) that you do anything in your power to separate yourself from the rest of the qualified candidates. This might be taking on double majors, joining clubs, doing internships, etc. This all plays a part, and in one of the most competitive job markets in the world, it becomes necessary.

You see, investment bankers are forced to live on the road, and essentially never sleep. They are constantly working out deals that will make the company money, because they know that the bonus check at the end of the year depends on it. But what is investment banking?

Well in the simplest of terms, an investment banking company works with other companies to help take them public on the stock market. Once a company is considered public, its shares are sold to anyone that can afford them, and decisions are made by the board of directors rather than the person who actually started the company. Its a give and take for the current owners, because although they are essentially selling their company, they become millionaires on paper (usually) because of it.

Investment banking professionals may also work on a variety of different business related deals for companies and individuals but the bread and butter remains in the IPO (initial public offering) market, and it proves to be the most lucrative as well for both the investment bank, and small business.
