Before I begin, let me say that I realize this appears to be a little self-serving. I am a Seattle DUI lawyer, after all. But I would point out that I did not say that you should have me in your phone, just that you should have someone in your phone. I’d hope that you’d talk to me and consider me for inclusion in your phone, but just having someone you can call is the most important thing.
Why is this so important? Because at some point in your life you or someone you are with is going to be hassled by the cops. Maybe it’s because you deserve it, maybe it’s because you don’t. Frankly I don’t care why the cops are there. What I care about is keeping you out of trouble, and this is particularly true if you are being investigated for DUI.
The reason it’s so important to have someone you can call when the cops come around is that you are at a tremendous disadvantage when dealing with the cops. They know several things about almost everyone they come into contact with. First, you think you know something about the law but you probably don’t. Second, you think you can talk your way out of the problem. And third, you are highly susceptible to being guilted into doing whatever the cop wants.
For example, one of the typical situations I see with DUI clients is this. Cop asks client to get out of car and asks them if they want to take field sobriety tests. Now, the rule is, no matter whether you’ve had one drink or ten, you never want to take field sobriety tests. So client hesitates, and the cop hits them with, “if you don’t think you were DUI there’s no reason you shouldn’t take theses tests.” Client is hooked, and next thing you know they are being transported to the station.
If you are in Seattle, make sure you put a Seattle DUI lawyer in your phone. Call them if you get in trouble. Call them before you get in trouble. Find out what you need to do if/when you get in a tight situation. It will make a huge difference.
