If you’re looking to breathe new life into a winter formal dress, think of the piece as a foundation upon which you will build a fabulous, creative outfit. Staying warm and looking stellar sometimes seem to be at odds. But being practical and pretty is possible if you put together the right combination of layers and accessories. Winter formal dresses don’t have to be boring and stuffy.

If your dress is made out of a velvety or metallic material, go ahead and let it be the star of your outfit. If it’s made out of a more subdued material, such as tweed or wool, give it a new energy with bold accent pieces.

But, before you don the dress, pick out a silky or lacey romper, camisole or slip. Choose one in a neutral shade if your winter formal dress is colorful or one in a contrasting shade if your dress is plain. (Yes, it’s perfectly fine if the lace peeks out in places.) Then wiggle your way into a pair of pantyhose, sweater stockings or leggings to give you a warm insulation.

If your dress is strappy, your next layer should be a lacy shell. In contrast, if you’re working with a short-sleeved shift dress, consider wearing a long-sleeved top with some texture underneath.

Next, pile on a set of silver or gold necklaces in like colors and materials, and choose a handbag with a chain strap in a similar vain. (Tip: If your dress is a gold metallic, try silver accessories, and vice versa.)

Then, go glam with a dazzling faux fur coat that hits just below the hip or a fuzzy bolero jacket that hits just above the hip. Finally, strap on a pair of sky-high, gemmed, sturdy heels.

At this point, your dress for winter formal should be rejuvenated, and you should be protected from the elements.
