Cyclonic systems and filtered systems are the two most popular types of central vacuum systems available on the market.

With the cyclonic system the dirt carrying air is forced into a cyclonic motion which throws the dirt and dust down into a bag or canister.  As its name suggests, a filtered system depends on a filter to remove the dirt from the air.

Either system can be used with a bagged or canister system.  With a bagged system the dirt can be disposed of in a bag when the base unit requires emptying.  The canister system has to be taken out and cleaned, before the empty canister is reinserted into the unit.

Whichever system you use, cyclonic or filtration, you can choose to vent your base unit to the exterior, if the base unit is placed in a room with an exterior wall.  This eliminates any chance of dust carrying air getting back into the home.
