What’s the Difference Between Mold and Mildew?

When we think of mold and mildew, some of us may believe that they’re the very same. Actually, this just isn’t true. While they are similar, there are also some differences between the two.

Molds are actually a type of fungus that produces growth on surfaces where moisture or decay lurks. Molds can grow on everything from leather to clothing to walls and ceilings. Many molds can be identified by their colors, which can range anywhere from blue, green, black and even red. While most molds are really harmless, there are some that can be toxic and actually make us very sick.

Mildews are also a fungus that grows on moist surfaces. But while mildews share the moisture, they are usually only found in showers, bathtubs and windowsills. Their colors can actually be identified as either gray or white with a fuzzy texture and while they are not toxic like mold, they can cause allergies in some people.

So what about those products that say they work for both mold & mildew? While they may remove a mildewing problem, they might not be able to remove mold as easily.
