There are several new methods currently used for getting rid of acne scars. One of the newer techniques is called laser resurfacing. This is normally used for moderate to severe acne scarring. It will be done by a dermatologist. If a laser resurfacing is to be done the doctor will first numb the area of the skin then use a laser to remove the top most layer of skin. Because the laser provides heat to the area it will toughen the layer of skin below causing the scar to be removed and a much smoother skin surface. It takes at least a week if not more for the area to heal.
Another new technique for the removal of acne scars is called a chemical peel. This is one of the quickest ways to remove slight to moderate acne scars. It is similar to using a stronger type of exfoliating scrub. When the chemical peel is applied to the areas of the skin that have acne scars it removes the top layer of skin thus removing the scar. It is normally performed at a dermatology office in a short time. The side effects are usually minimal but include redness and irritation at the site that normally only lasts a few days.
