Laxatives are the most common answer to constipation problems. There are several varieties of laxatives that are administered as a remedy for constipation, prominent among them being lubricant laxatives, rich in mineral oils which act to retain the moisture in the colon and consequently act as natural stool softeners. Hypersmolar laxatives coat the colon with a filmy layer and serves in saving the moisture required to soften the stool. Emollient laxatives have a wetting agent which serves the same purpose. Saline laxatives act to suck water into the colon and Stimulant laxatives excite the muscles to expand and contract, a process that is helpful to push the stools through the intestine.

Thiphala, a mixture compounded from several medicinal herbs, manufactured by the Indian pharmaceutical giant Himalayan Drugs is a proven constipation remedy under Ayurveda. The users of this mixture swear upon its efficacy in solving even the most resistant cases of constipation, on taking just one tea spoonful mixed with warm water at night
