The yellow pages of the phone book can be quite disturbing and intimidating when doing research. First of all, if you don’t know how to spell a word how are you going to look it up? I was hoping to do a little shopping for new earrings and began my search by looking for “jewellery earrings.” Finding no listing with that spelling I did, however, find “jewelry” listed. Obviously I won’t be winning any spelling bees as I had misspelled the word completely. Imagine my confusion if I had to look up the word “zenophobia.” There is no such spelling like that listed. Zenophobia is spelled with an “X”—”xenophobia.” Or even “zylophone”, which is also spelled with an “X”—”xylophone.” Imagine that! English must be most confusing for foreigners arriving on our shores. Perhaps a mail-order class in the use and correct spelling English might benefit newcomers. We natives, too, I’d bet.
