Headaches in children and babies

Migraine headaches may also affect small children and babies but the symptoms are different than adults. Children and babies experience abdominal pain accompanied with nausea and vomiting.  The more common symptom of headaches in children is pain on the forehead or in the middle of the head rather than on one of the sides, as in the case with adults. This symptom however may not occur in all children.

Other symptoms of migraines in children include dark rings around the eyes, feeling of dizziness, and ache pain in the limbs.

One way to understand that a child is suffering from headaches is the tendency to experience travel sickness. During a migraine headaches crisis, children usually want to sit down and they do not want to eat any food. Fortunately the crisis is shorter than in adults and is not lasting more than 2 hours.

As in the case with adults it is recommended for children (using the help of their parents) to keep a journal to record everything that did and eat before, during and after the crisis. In this way further attacks can be prevented by avoiding actions or food that trigger the headaches. A good tip for getting relief from the pain is to give to the child meals with slow release carbohydrates such as a bowl of cereal.
