Once your dog has reached the ripe old age of 7 year (large breed dogs – 5 years), their diets change again. As in humans, their organs also age, especially the kidneys begin to lose the ability to filter waste materials from the blood which is then passed in urine.
Feed your pet high-quality food scientifically created for the senior dog. Have your veterinarian examine him to see if there are any health problems that may require a special diet.
If needed, special foods can be prescribed along with medications. Studies have shown that diets rich in antioxidants can help lessen senility.
Do not give supplements unless recommended by your veterinarian. The digestive tract of the older dog is very sensitive to unbalanced diet consisting of too frequent snacks, treats and table food.
Take your aging pet to the veterinarian at least once a year for a medical checkup to catch or prevent any medical problems. The proper diet throughout the life of your pet is also an important part of preventative medicine.
Fresh filtered water should be available at all times.
