Learning when to switch dog food from adult to puppy is key to the long term health of your dog.
For most dogs, puppyhood lasts about one year; however, large breed dogs may continue to grow rapidly until about 24 months old. During this stage, puppies require higher levels of minerals (calcium and phosphorus), protein, vitamins and calories. These foods should be fed in higher well-balanced levels with other dietary nutrients. Pet foods should be labeled for ‘canine grown’ to distinguish it from diets meant for older dogs. Do not feed your larger breeds containing higher levels of vitamins, minerals and proteins thinking that this will serve the purpose instead of proper food for puppies. Excess amounts of these nutrients can actually be harmful to the developing puppy as can feeding your pet human food or nutritional supplements meant for humans.
Do not overfeed puppies especially fast-growing larger breeds; this could cause arthritis later. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for whichever food you use.
